DUBAI (Health & Fitness Journal) – An attack on a tanker off the coast of Oman on Tuesday was carried out by an Iranian-made drone, the US Central Command said in a statement, adding that a multilateral naval operation led by a British Royal Navy frigate was launched Navy responded to the area.
An Israeli official had blamed Iran for the attack on the tanker Pacific Zircon, managed by Israeli-controlled Eastern Pacific Shipping. The company stated that there was minor damage to the hull, but no injuries or spillage of the gasoil cargo.
A White House official previously said the United States is “confident that Iran likely carried out the attack using an unmanned aerial vehicle.” The Iranian newspaper Nournews, which belongs to the country’s top security agency, blamed Israel for the attack.
The US Central Command said in a statement late Wednesday that debris “shows it was a Shahed-series disposable attack drone” that struck the ship, identifying it as Iranian-made.
“This attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle on a civilian ship in this critical strait demonstrates once again the destabilizing nature of malign Iranian activities in the region,” the Central Command statement said.
A multilateral operation was said to have responded to the scene, led by the British Royal Navy’s HMS Lancaster. The operation involved the US Navy guided missile destroyer USS The Sullivans and a US Navy coastal patrol ship and patrol boat.
Attacks on tankers in Gulf waters in recent years have come at a time of heightened regional tensions with Iran.
In July 2021, a suspected drone strike off the coast of Oman hit a petroleum products tanker managed by an Israeli company. Iran has denied allegations of responsibility.
