WASHINGTON (Health & Fitness Journal) – U.S. President Joe Biden, wearing his signature aviator sunglasses, on Monday pardoned two North Carolina turkeys named Chocolate and Chip, sparing them from Thanksgiving dinner tables.

In return, the pair devoured giant turkeys to show their appreciation in the latest installment of the White House smiling tradition to ring in the holiday season.

With November temperatures making for chilly air on the South Lawn, Biden said he doesn’t want to have a long event because “nobody likes their turkey to get cold.”

The US military band warmed up the crowd by playing a version of the Lynyrd Skynyrd song “Free Bird” before the pardon. From the White House balcony behind Biden, his German shepherd commander watched and barked loudly.

Millions of turkeys will be roasted and drenched in gravy in Thanksgiving ovens across the country on Thursday, accompanied by a variety of sides, from potatoes to green bean casseroles.

But Chocolate, weighing 45 pounds, and Chip, 47 pounds, will spend their lives in their home state at North Carolina State University. The White House turkey pardon is a decades-old tradition.

Biden pointed to the midterm congressional elections on November 8, in which the Democrats retained control of the US Senate and narrowly lost the House of Representatives to the Republicans, and denied the opposition party its hoped-for “red wave”.

“The votes have come in. They have been counted and verified. There is no ballot filling. There’s no such thing as a ‘chicken game,'” he joked. The only “red wave,” Biden said, will come when Commander spills the cranberry sauce.

Later Monday night, Biden and his wife Jill flew to North Carolina to thank local Marines during a “Friendsgiving” dinner.

“They represent 1% of the population and they’re defending the rest of us,” Biden said, before donning an apron and gloves to spoon up mashed potatoes for military personnel. “We wanted to come and tell you how much we appreciate everything you’ve done.”
